Newcomers to Wirral are lucky indeed. They still have the pleasure of discovering, for the first time, a place unlike anywhere else in England...
Ours is a picture-pretty peninsula with mile upon mile of unspoilt coastline, chocolate box villages, amazing leisure activities and - thanks to the sea lapping on three sides - a warm and gentle climate.
In a tiny six by nine miles area we have... 14 golf courses and two driving ranges, 1,500 hectares of public open space, 20 woodland and four heathland sites, 12 sites of special scientific interest and 70 sites of biological significance, a huge 52 acre marine lake (see above), seven sailing clubs, superb cycle routes - including 12 miles off-road along the Wirral Way hugging the Dee coast. We have museums, theatres, the superb Lady Lever Art Gallery. We have lovely villages and snug country pubs, a wide choice of excellent dining, easy parking and ready access to excellent shopping.
Most of all, we have stupendous views. Look across the Mersey, to the world famous (and thanks to its Capital of Culture year, now burgeoning) Liverpool skyline and then turn and gaze across the sparkling Dee to mighty Snowdonia. Stand at the high point of the peninsula and you will thrill to the unique sight of water lapping around you on all three sides. This picture is made complete on the descent into West Kirby, when rounding a corner the magical view of Hilbre is suddenly revealed, the island surrounded by white horses, with the Irish Sea stretching ahead to nothingness.
Whether or not you are considering Kingsmead for your family, do come and see our lovely peninsula, of which we are so proud. Whatever you are looking for, you will find it here.
The links of the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake now once again play host to the Open Championship.
