Religious Education

Throughout the school, the Religious Studies department develops the theme of the challenges of life in the 21st century with the Bible as the starting point for discussion.

Classes include ample opportunities to exchange and debate ideas and opinions about the meaning of life, good and evil, how we should live, issues of citizenship, as well as to develop a knowledge of the Bible.

GCSE curriculum

All Kingsmead students follow a short course to GCSE level based on Mark’s gospel. R.E. is a statutory requirement and many schools see the taking of Religious Studies at GCSE level a natural extension of this. On two periods per week the short course can be attempted in two years. Coursework consists of one essay worth 20% of the total mark.

We are well-placed at Kingsmead to pursue these options. Although references are made to practice in other faiths, the main thrust is reflected in the choice of The Christian Life and the Gospel'.

The Bible is supplemented by a variety of supporting materials which stimulate interest and understanding of the Gospel of Mark.

Discussion plays an important part in preparation as examination of more than one point of view is encouraged; videos can also be useful. Theology (and Philosophy) are increasingly popular A level and AS level choices.
