National athletics

Kingsmead athletesOn Monday 4th July Kingsmead pupils travelled to Birmingham to compete in the IAPS National Athletics competition at the Alexander stadium in Birmingham.

Seven pupils had qualified to compete with about 1000 other pupils from all over the country by winning the North West regional trials at Macclesfield in May. The following pupils were North West champions in their event: Jonathan Clewett -1500m, Emily Sullivan- 300m, Cordelia Reynolds - Shot put, Josh Morris -200m, Angus Kemp -100m, Jordan Dodd -Javelin, Ella Johnson- Long jump.

Despite the quality of competition being extremely high the Kingsmead pupils were not intimidated. They all performed very well in very hot conditions, with many achieving their personal bests. Notable performances were Jonathan Clewett who was 7th in the 1500m but improved his PB by about 12 seconds, completing the race in 4mins 59.9 seconds! Ella Johnson was another who improved her PB with a super jump of 3.9m.

The pupils had a great day and it is an experience they will remember for years to come. A big 'thank you' must go to Mrs Johnson who helped organise the pupils and took many photographs on the day, including this group photo.

My personal hope is that these pupils will be inspired to pursue their athletics and I am already looking forward to the cross country season in the new academic year!
