"A team of 4 year 7 Science students was selected to take part in the annual Salters’ Festival of Chemistry at Liverpool John Moores University. They were Celia Bueno, Dominic Potter, Caroline Welsh and Edward Wrightson. The aim of the event is to bring together teams of students to take part in a Chemistry competition and to have fun with Science.
The morning practicals were based on forensic science. The students had to analyse the samples taken from a crime scene and determine who had stolen a valuable silver salt dish. The Kingsmead team worked really well in pairs to replicate results and correctly identified the thief. Well done.
The afternoon practical was all about Chemical teamwork! The team had to time a chemical reaction, which took place in 12 seconds. They then had to work out how to slow that reaction so that it took place in 30 seconds. A team of judges would observe them. The added excitement was that the teachers were not allowed to stay and help their teams. Mrs Austin left the lab knowing the Kingsmead team would do their best. As she walked back into the huge University lab she saw smiles and high fives as the Kingsmead team celebrated the fact they had slowed the reaction to 29 seconds. Would this be enough to win them a prize? We had to wait for the presentation to find out. Kingsmead were awarded 3rd prize for their Iodine Clock Challenge. The brilliant team were awarded a bag and a clock each. They also earned a £25 prize for the school. We are very proud of them. Not only did they beat 15 other good schools, they were also against schools with Year 8 team members. Congratulations Kingsmead Science team."
Both Caroline and Edward won Kingsmead scholarships into Year 7 in 2007.
