Kingsmead under 11 cricket team have made dramatic progress under the guidance of team manager and coach Mr Hope.
After the cancellation of a fixture against Liverpool College due to inclement weather, the team travelled to Pownall Hall to play on their articificial pitch. Matteo Bertacca starred for Kingsmead in an all-round capacity, with Allie Beech close behind. Mr Hope was encouraged, despite a defeat, by the performance of the side.
Kingsmead was the setting for the next fixture, at home to St Mary’s Hall, the junior school attached to Stonyhurst College. The team showed further improvement, with Lewis Tran repelling the hostile visiting attack by keeping his wicket intact for 14 overs, helping the side to an impressive 83 runs which the visitors eventually managed to overhaul.
Runs from Mihal Abraham, Allie Beech and Lewis Tran is particular saw the total against Sunnymede pass three figures for the first time this season, but it was the following game against Manchester-based Rileys School which brought the first victory of the campaign.
Kingsmead set a challenging target of 94 for victory, and after ten overs, the opposition were in control. But fine bowling from Allie Beech brought Kingsmead back into the game and great pressure from Matteo Bertacca in a tight final over resulted in a famous win.
Mr Hope said “This is a great side to work with. They have made huge progress as the season has gone along, and I am delighted with their attitude. They love the game. We still have a few more matches to play, as well as a six-a-side tournament at Stockport Grammar early in July, and I don’t think we have seen the best of them yet!”
Elsewhere on the cricket scene, the under 13 side are enjoying remarkable success and the under 9’s claimed a famous away victory against top local club Oxton CC.
