27 Jan 2017: Spencer’s Spanish golf success
One of our Year 5 boys, Spencer Davies, has achieved a remarkable win in a prestigious Spanish golf competition.
Spencer took part in the Graham Moore Spanish Open, a highly valued junior competition organised by renowned professional golfer Graham Moore. The qualifier is designed to test the young participants with playing conditions that are an exact replica of main professional tournaments taking place on Campo Asia, the oldest of La Cala’s three courses and the one most respected by professionals.
The competition demanded skill and strategy from participants who play from tee locations related to their ages; gross–only scores counted towards the competition results and there was no handicap involvement at all, creating a realistic playing location for future champions.
Spencer qualified as a winner from the tournament for a place at the IMG Junior World Championship, an International Junior Golf Festival based in Southern California that aims to expand junior golf through competition. There are only four places available for children from the United Kingdom in his age group.
Spencer played unbelievably well over the 36-hole competition and won by a comfortable 6 shots. In his first round he recorded the lowest score in this competition for the last 9 years for his age group.
Said his mum, Victoria: “Spencer’s mental attitude – to be so young and play at this level with so much pressure – is a measure to how much practice he puts into his golf. This was a fantastic achievement!”
